Shillong: In Meghalaya, a grassroots movement is gaining momentum as citizens take proactive steps to clean and maintain streets, villages, and public spaces. Armed with brooms and a sense of purpose, residents are reclaiming these shared areas as extensions of their own homes. While urban waste is often addressed through infrastructure and policy, the response in Meghalaya is notably personal. The state urban affairs department has intensified its focus on sustainable waste management, aligning policy, infrastructure, and public participation. This initiative is inspired by the national ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ campaign, which has successfully promoted civic responsibility and tangible action.
Volunteers across districts are leading by example, cleaning streets and collecting plastic waste, thereby influencing entire communities and redefining urban responsibility. Shynnaki Dkhar from Nongkynrih Village, West Jaintia Hills District, exemplifies this commitment. Despite being differently abled, he tirelessly cleans his area, demonstrating that dedication surpasses physical constraints.
In Upper Mawprem, Shillong, Deba Prasad Ghosh has consistently joined municipal workers in cleaning drains and removing waste, contributing to the community's cleanliness.Supporting these citizen-led efforts, the urban affairs department introduced the Green Deposit Scheme in December 2025. Implemented at major eco-tourism destinations like Sohra (Cherrapunjee) and Dawki, the scheme adds a refundable deposit to plastic beverage containers.
Tourists receive the deposit back upon returning empty bottles, promoting responsible behaviour and reducing litter in sensitive areas.Women-led initiatives are also playing a crucial role in Meghalaya’s waste management efforts. Groups such as the ‘Merry Maidens’ of Shillong and the Lainehskhem Self-Help Group are producing certified compost using traditional techniques, turning organic waste into a valuable resource. These initiatives highlight the significant role of women in driving cleanliness, sanitation, and environmental stewardship at the community level.
