A fresh spell of rain greeted many parts of Chennai on Tuesday (December 16, 2025) morning, offering a break from the dry days after Cyclone Ditwah.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has predicted light to moderate rainfall particularly over coastal and delta districts on Tuesday, with isolated heavy showers likely in Tirunelveli and Tenkasi districts. Several parts in Chennai and its neighbourhood, including the core city, Perambur, Tambaram, and Red Hills, received moderate showers since Tuesday morning.

The rain spell of light to moderate intensity would continue in some parts of the State on Wednesday too owing to a minor weather system and wind convergence. However, rainfall activity is expected to be more concentrated over south Tamil Nadu and dry weather may return over north Tamil Nadu by December 18.

During the past 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday, the State experienced largely dry weather, except for 1 cm of rainfall reported in Pamban (Ramanathapuram district). Coimbatore airport recorded the coldest night temperature of 19.4 degree Celsius among the weather stations in the plains of the State.

Rainfall over Chennai is expected to lead to a marginal rise in night temperature for two days. The RMC has predicted that the minimum temperature would be around 23-24 degree Celsius in the city on Tuesday. The city is likely to experience light rainfall and a warmer night on Wednesday too.

Since October 1, the State has received an overall rainfall of 42 cm, which is 2% more than its seasonal average. In its Nowcast, valid till 4 p.m., the RMC has forecast moderate rainfall to occur in Villupuram and Chennai and neighbouring districts, and light/moderate rainfall is likely over districts along the coast between Cuddalore and Kanniyakumari.
