A 23-year-old history-sheeter was hacked to death by a gang in the early hours of Monday (January 12, 2026) in the waiting area of Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital (KMC), where the man was sleeping near the maternity ward. The police said the murder was committed due to a previous enmity.

The victim has been identified as Adhi, a resident of Mahatma Gandhi Nagar, Kolathur. He had more than seven criminal cases pending against him, including those of murder and attempt to murder.

According to police sources, Adhi came to the hospital on Sunday (January 11) night to meet his classmate Suchitra, 21, who was married to a person named Surya. She gave birth to a premature baby on December 16, 2025, at KMC. The newborn’s health condition deteriorated at the hospital over the past few days, and the child died on Sunday without responding to treatment.

After meeting Suchitra on Sunday, Adhi stayed in the waiting area outside the maternity ward.

Police sources said at around 3.30 a.m. on Monday, Suchitra’s husband Surya and his associates arrived at the spot. They surrounded Adhi and repeatedly attacked him with weapons. Adhi suffered fatal injuries and collapsed.

On being alerted, the Kilpauk police rushed to the scene, recovered Adhi’s body, and sent it for post-mortem examination. The police formed special teams and launched an intensive search to arrest the three accused — Surya, Alibhai, and Karthik — who fled the scene after committing the murder.

On Monday afternoon, Additional Commissioner of Police (South), K.S. Narenthiran Nair, and Joint Commissioner of Police (East), Bandi Gangadhar, visited the scene of the crime and conducted a preliminary inquiry. Mr. Nair said two of the accused involved in the crime had been arrested.

Motive behind murder

Addressing reporters, Mr. Nair said the victim had come out of prison on bail 10 days ago and had visited Suchitra, who was his classmate, after she had given birth at the hospital. Adhi and an attendant, who was with Suchitra, reportedly fought with the hospital staff following the death of her child late Sunday. Security personnel from the hospital had to evict the two. However, they stayed in the waiting area near the ward and consumed alcohol.

At 3 a.m., the police intervened and asked them to vacate, and another quarrel ensued. The police suspect that the attendant, a woman, had tipped off the suspects about Adhi’s movements. He had allegedly been involved in the murder of a person named Palani in Rajamangalam in 2023; this could also be a motive behind the murder, the police said.

The Additional Commissioner added: “We have arrested two persons and brought in two women for interrogation. Four more suspects have been questioned.”
