Ace Indian badminton duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty went down to the Chinese pairing of Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang on Sunday in the final of the men’s doubles event at the Hong Kong Open.
Weikeng and Chang rallied from a game down to seal the title with a 19-21, 21-14, 21-17 triumph over the celebrated Indian duo in the championship clash.
Satwik and Chirag clinched the opening game of the summit clash 21-19 in thrilling fashion as the Indian duo clawed their way back from a couple of points down late in the set.
However, the Chinese duo restored parity in the second game with a 21-14 win to push the game into a deciding third set, in which they wrapped the fixture up in comfortable fashion as Chang and Wikang triumphed 21-17 to get their hands on the title.
Satwik and Chirag qualified for their first final since May 2024, when they won the Thailand Open, after the eighth seeds beat Chinese Taipei’s Chen Cheng Kuan and Lin Bing-wei 21-17, 21-15 in just 38 minutes in their first meeting.
All that stood in their way of gold were the two-time Chinese sixth seeds Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang, whom Satwik and Chirag beat in the last 16 at the World Championships.
