India has produced nine world champions in boxing, with MC Mary Kom leading the way as the most successful, winning six gold medals over two decades. Jenny RL and Laishram Sarita Devi both secured gold in 2006 at the New Delhi Worlds, with Sarita later receiving the Arjuna Award. Lekha KC, also a winner in 2006, became India’s champion in the 75kg category and was honoured with the Dhyan Chand Award for lifetime achievement. A new generation has since continued this legacy, led by Nikhat Zareen, who won gold in 2022 in Istanbul. In 2023, Nitu Ghanghas, Lovlina Borgohain, and Saweety Boora all claimed titles, marking India’s most successful campaign. Most recently, in 2025, Jaismine Lamboria emerged victorious in the featherweight division, defeating Olympic medallist Julia Szeremeta.

MC Mary Kom, the legendary boxer from Manipur, is India’s most decorated pugilist at the Women’s World Boxing Championships. She made history as the first Indian to win a medal on the global stage with a silver in 2001. She then went on to secure six gold medals in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2018 in the light flyweight (48kg) category. A mother of three and a former Rajya Sabha member, Mary Kom, born on 24 November 1982, remains a prominent icon in Indian sport.

Nikhat Zareen from Telangana gained prominence with her gold medal at the 2022 World Championships in Istanbul. Competing in the flyweight (52kg) category, she triumphed over Thailand’s Jitpong Jutamas 5-0 in the final, becoming the fifth Indian woman to win world gold.

Lovlina Borgohain, the Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist, continued her impressive form into the 2023 World Championships, winning gold in the 75kg category by defeating Australia’s Caitlin Parker.

Nitu Ghanghas became India’s sixth world champion in March 2023 after defeating Mongolia’s Lutsaikhany Altantsetseg 5-0 in the minimumweight category, further showcasing India’s strength in women’s boxing.

Laishram Sarita Devi, born on 1 March 1982 in Manipur, became a world champion in 2006 by winning gold in the light bantamweight category at the New Delhi edition. Her contributions to Indian boxing were recognised with the Arjuna Award in 2009.

Saweety Boora also made history in 2023 by winning gold in the light heavyweight division (81kg), overcoming China’s Wang Lina 4-3 in a tense final.

Jenny RL from Mizoram made history by winning gold in the light welterweight (63kg) category at the 2006 Women’s World Amateur Boxing Championships in New Delhi. Her achievement significantly contributed to India’s medal tally during a successful campaign that year.

Lekha KC, representing India in the 75kg middleweight division, also won gold at the 2006 Women’s World Championships in New Delhi. Born on 22 April 1981 in Kerala’s Kannur district, she was honoured with the Dhyan Chand Award in 2021 for lifetime achievement.

Jaismine Lamboria became the latest addition to India’s roll of honour in September 2025 by winning the featherweight (57kg) title. She outclassed Poland’s Julia Szeremeta, the Paris Olympics silver medallist, with a 4-1 victory to conclude a remarkable campaign.
