Music composer Ilaiyaraaja's copyright case against Ajith Kumar's film 'Good Bad Ugly' has concluded. The Chennai High Court closed the case after the production company assured it would remove Ilaiyaraaja's songs. The makers had previously faced a similar issue with the film 'Dude'. This ruling reinforces creators' rights.
An important verdict has been delivered today in the case filed by music composer Ilaiyaraaja in the Chennai High Court. A case was filed by Ilaiyaraaja against the film 'Good Bad Ugly,' starring actor Ajith Kumar, alleging that songs were used without his permission.
In the final hearing of this case, the court closed the case by recording the assurance given by the production company.
This ruling assumes significance in matters related to intellectual property rights.
Interim ban on Ilaiyaraaja’s songs draws attention
As per News 18, the focus of Ilaiyaraaja's complaint is that popular songs like 'Ilamai Idho Idho,' 'Oththa Rupayum Tharen,' and 'En Jodi Manja Kuruvi' were used in the film without his permission. Following this, the Madras High Court, which heard the case, initially imposed an interim ban on the use of Ilaiyaraaja's songs in the film 'Good Bad Ugly.'
This order attracted a lot of attention in the film industry.
'The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly' makers agree to remove songs
The makers of 'Good Bad Ugly' filed a petition in the court seeking the lifting of this interim injunction. In it, it stated that it had acquired the rights to the songs in question from Sony, and at the same time, they also announced that all the controversial Ilaiyaraaja songs had been removed from the film. They also assured that those songs would not be used in any way in the future.
When the petition came up for hearing again before Judge Senthilkumar today (December 16), the production company clearly recorded its determination in court.
The judge accepted this and ordered the case filed by Ilaiyaraaja to be closed. The ruling is seen as a reaffirmation of the importance of the law protecting the rights of creators.
‘Dude’ copyright controversy found a smooth solution
It is worth noting that the same production house faced a similar kind of violation from Ilaiyaraaja for using the latter's songs in the film 'Dude.'
But the production house sorted out the issue, reportedly by paying Rs 50 lakhs in compensation for Ilaiyaraaja, and sought permission to use the 'Karutha Machan' song in the Pradeep Ranganathan and Mamitha Baiju starrer.Disclaimer: This article is for informational purposes only and is based on reported news of court proceedings and legal claims.
