The Cleveland Cavaliers may have won the game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday night — but for one bizarre moment, they also scored for the opposition.
In what was likely a never-before-seen moment in NBA history, during the 146–134 Cavs win over the T’Wolves, Cleveland forward Nae’Qwan Tomlin managed something rarely seen: he accidentally tipped a jump ball straight into his own basket.
A jump ball? Well, I guess it turned out to be more of a jump shot… into the wrong basket.
This wasn’t the opening tip. It came off a held-ball jump at the foul line with 3:34 remaining.
Tomlin leapt against Julius Randle, got a clean, forceful tap — and watched the ball bank off the glass and drop neatly through the hoop.
Under NBA rules, when a defensive player scores in his own basket, the points are credited to the offensive player closest to the rim. That honor fell to Naz Reid, who was simply standing underneath.
Two points. Zero effort. Likely the easiest bucket of Reid’s career.
The accidental score briefly trimmed Cleveland’s lead from 136–119 to 136–121, though it ultimately had no impact on the outcome. Still, it created one of the strangest box-score quirks you’ll see all season.
Tomlin finished the night with four points for Cleveland — and two for Minnesota, making him a scorer on both sides of the ledger.
At 25, Tomlin has carved out a useful role as a bench contributor for the Cavs during a turbulent season, averaging 6.1 points and 3.0 rebounds in 15.2 minutes. But Saturday’s moment will live on less for production and more for pure NBA absurdity.
One jump. One tap. One unforgettable own basket.
