It did not feel like the arrival of a diplomat. It felt like the opening night of a rock concert. Like waiting for Elvis to enter the building.

As Sergio Gor stepped into the US embassy complex in Chanakyapuri, the air throbbed with the sound of rock n roll — from Guns N’ Roses to Metallica to R.E.M, the riffs of the electric guitar bouncing off the sandstone walls. This building and these crowds gathered in front of it were more accustomed to protocol than power chords. This was not background music politely playing in the background. This was a statement, amplified to be heard in the corridors of power. The playlist, staffers whispered, was curated by the man himself — an Ambassador who is also a part-time DJ, and a full-time believer in the idea that music, like politics, is about capturing people’s attention. And capture attention he did.

The scene unfolded with the choreography of a grand show. A red carpet rolled out cleanly through the forecourt. A military band stood at attention, brass gleaming under the January Delhi sun. Embassy staff lined up on either side, less like bureaucrats and more like an audience waiting for a rock star. At the centre stood a lectern unmistakably modelled on the one used by the US President — familiar from countless televised moments of American power. Behind it, two giant American flags filled the frame, meant to be the backdrop as the Ambassador spoke, looming large. And at 12 noon, the gates opened, and a shiny back SUV pulled in. Gor stepped out, welcomed by the Chef De mission and to loud applause from the waiting crowds.

When Gor spoke, it was not a murmur. It was an opening address pitched to resonate in the corridors of power. His tone carried the confidence of someone who knows optics matter more than words. The cues were clear: this was America arriving loudly, unapologetically, dramatically. Diplomacy, would not be confined to closed doors and carefully worded communiqués. It would be performative. And perform he did.

Seasoned Delhi watchers among the assembled group of journalists, struggled to recall anything quite like this. No other American envoy had chosen this sort of spectacle over subtlety on day one. Traditionally, the first act of an ambassador is a quiet one — presenting credentials to Rashtrapati Bhavan, bowing to protocol before stepping into public view. Gor has not yet completed that ritual. He is expected to meet President Murmu later this week. And yet, here he was, already occupying the stage, already shaping the narrative, already signalling pomp over policy.

There was something unmistakably campaign-like about the entire production. The music. The crowd management. The lectern. This was less the careful understatement of Foggy Bottom and more the muscular showmanship of American politics as has been demonstrated by Gor’s boss, President Donald Trump. If the intent was to ensure that Gor’s arrival did not go unnoticed in Delhi, it worked. Much like Trump walking down the escalator 10 years ago announcing his Presidential run.

Delhi is no stranger to displays of power. It has seen imperial parades, military marches, and carefully choreographed state visits. But this felt different — less ceremonial, more visceral. Less tradition, more tempo. The message was not hidden between diplomatic lines: this envoy intends to hit the ground running, and to do so at full volume.

In the end, Sergio Gor did what few diplomats manage on their very first day — he made people stop, stare, and talk. Before the paperwork. Before the credentials. Before the quiet work of diplomacy begins. In a city that reads symbolism fluently, the symbolism was clear. America had arrived — not with a whisper, but with the loud riff of the electric guitar.
