New Year begins with rare sighting of newborn one-horned rhino at Jaldapara

The first day of 2026 came with a rare and heartwarming moment from the wild. A video of a newborn one horned rhinoceros calf from Jaldapara National Park was shared online by Indian Forest Service officer Parveen Kaswan, and the clip soon started getting noticed.

The young calf was seen on January 1, 2026, and many people online felt that this peaceful scene was a hopeful way to welcome the new year.

Calf seen during regular elephant patrol

The newborn rhino was noticed during routine patrolling work inside the park. An elephant mounted team came across the mother and calf while moving through the forest as part of daily monitoring activity in Jaldapara National Park.

Along with the video, Parveen Kaswan also shared that every rhino birth inside the park is tracked carefully under a proper conservation system.He wrote, “As per the established protocol of Jaldapara National Park, every newborn rhino is systematically recorded, counted, and closely monitored as part of the park’s intensive management and conservation programme.”He added that this helps ensure protection for both the calf and the mother during the early stage after birth.

Early movement helps calves survive

Kaswan also shared a simple biological fact about the species. He mentioned that newborn greater one horned rhino calves usually begin standing and walking within a few hours of birth so that they can stay close to their mother.

In his Facebook post, he wrote, “A calf that cannot move quickly is vulnerable to predators, making early walking an important survival adaptation of the species.”
