An 89-year-old woman admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a hospital in Maharashtra’s Thane district was reportedly bitten by a rat, raising serious concerns about hygiene and safety standards at the medical facility. The incident took place at Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Hospital in Mira Bhayandar last week.

The woman, identified as Suhasini Mathekar, was admitted to the hospital on March 12 after she experienced health complications. Due to her critical condition, doctors placed her on a ventilator in the ICU located on the fourth floor of the hospital.

According to family members, the shocking incident came to light on the morning of March 13 when they visited the ICU and noticed that a rat had bitten the elderly woman’s hand. They alleged that the rodent fled the scene only after they intervened.

The family has accused the hospital administration of gross negligence, questioning how medical staff on night duty failed to notice the presence of a rat or respond to the distress of a patient in such a highly sensitive and monitored area.

Demanding accountability, the family has called for a thorough investigation into the incident. They have urged authorities to examine the conduct of the staff on duty, carry out an immediate audit of the hospital’s sanitation and pest control systems, and take strict action against those responsible to prevent such incidents from occurring again.
