A cloudburst hit Chennai during Saturday night, with Manali recording 270mm of rainfall, New Manali Town 260 mm of rainfall, and Wimco Nagar 230 mm, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday.

Multiple locations within the Chennai district have reported widespread, very heavy rainfall since Saturday, notably three locations recording extremely heavy rain (more than 200 mm in hours), the IMD stated.

The benchmark for cloudburst, according to IMD, is when rainfall of 100 mm occurs in one hour over an area of 2030 sq km.

The weather department had, however, not forecast any weather warnings for Sunday for Tamil Nadu.

In its morning weather update, IMD said that coastal Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, experienced intense convective activity.

“There were six reports of rain spells of over 10 cm/hr, and it qualifies for the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) & IMD’s definition of cloud burst,” said the IMD.
