Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday (August 12) said the police should not wait for anyone’s permission to act against illegal activities and that no incident disrupting people’s peaceful life should occur in the State.

He was inaugurating various completed and ongoing Kerala Police projects at the Dinesh Auditorium here.

The Chief Minister said Kerala enjoys a peaceful atmosphere compared to the rest of the country, but there are conscious attempts to disrupt it, often with political and religious motives. “The possibility of such activities intensifying cannot be ruled out. The police must remain vigilant against forces spreading hatred and animosity,” he said.

Highlighting the government’s focus on police infrastructure, he said the perception of police stations had changed in the past nine years, with better facilities for complainants, including women, children, and the differently abled. The State’s police force, he noted, is advanced in technology, crime investigation, and law and order, with many highly qualified youth joining the ranks, enabling effective prevention of modern crimes.

Mr. Vijayan said one of the government’s key achievements was giving the police a people-friendly image. “There is no external interference in crime investigations now. The partnership between police and the public is proving effective in tackling anti-social elements, drug rackets, and communal tensions. The social policing system will remain strong,” he said.

The Chief Minister inaugurated 13 projects and laid the foundation for seven others, together costing ₹23.27 crore.

The inaugurated projects include the ₹7.56 crore synthetic track and football court at the Kannur parade ground, a multi-purpose indoor court costing ₹1.42 crore, and a ₹1.19 crore hall for training and meetings at the district police headquarters. Other projects include new police stations at Vagamon, Thankamani, Melparamba, Ottapalam, Chittoor, and Bekal; the Ernakulam Crime Branch complex; the Idukki control room; and a Coastal Police boat jetty at Fort Kochi.

The Chief Minister also laid the foundation for the Mayyil police station, police quarters in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram city, and new stations in Palakkad, Koppam, and Changanassery.

Registration, Museum, Archives and Archaeology Minister Ramachandran Kadannappally presided over the event. Kannur Corporation Mayor Muslih Madathil, MLA M.V. Govindan, K.V. Sumesh, and other party leaders and senior police officials were present.
