Government Victoria College here celebrated Pongal festival on Wednesday, coinciding with the celebrations of Thiruvalluvar Day honouring poet-philosopher Thiruvalluvar.
The celebrations were held under the joint aegis of Kalakshetra Kala Sahitya Vedi and the Department of Tamil.
The organisers prepared Pongal and distributed it to all students and teachers on the campus. Various cultural programmes, including folk songs, Tamil solo and group songs and dramas, marked the festivities.
A poem titled Muthan Muthalai Ammavukku was picturised. P.V. Sahadevan’s one-act play titled Athi Rathanil Azhukai, condemning caste discriminations in society, was also staged.
Head of Tamil department Sujana Banu inaugurated the function. Mr. Sahadevan gave away certificates to actors of Dheeran Chinnamalai drama.
Kalakshetra Kala Vedi president Guruji Guruvayurappan presided over the function. Teachers S. Radha, R. Vanita, T. Sunita and Uma Maheswari, student representatives M. Azharudheen, Sunil Kallepully and Jayan Asksharakala spoke.
