Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder S. Ramadoss and his estranged son Anbumani Ramadoss on Wednesday (September 17, 2025) paid separate tributes to the 21 people killed during the 1987 Vanniyar reservation agitation, marking its 38th anniversary.
Mr. Ramadoss, accompanied by his elder daughter P. Gandhimathi, Pennagaram MLA and former PMK president G.K. Mani, and Vanniyar Sangam president Pu. Tha. Arulmozhi paid floral tributes to the portraits of the 21 persons at Thailapuram. Mr. Ramadoss also paid tributes at a memorial erected for the victims in Sithani, before leaving for Cuddalore.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Ramadoss said the sacrifice of the 21 persons did not go in vain and lakhs of people had benefitted from reservation. The PMK has been continuously fighting for the implementation of 10.5% internal reservation for Vanniyars in education and employment, and will ensure that the demand becomes a reality, he said.
Mr. Anbumani, accompanied by his supporters, paid tributes at Sithani and a few other places in Villupuram district.
The premises of the Vanniyar Sangam in Tindivanam, where PMK leaders usually pay their customary tribute on the anniversary of the agitation, remained closed on Wednesday. It was sealed by the police and revenue authorities last week after supporters of Mr. Ramadoss and Mr. Anbumani got into a heated argument over access to the office.
A huge posse of police personnel was deployed in front of the office.
