Social media fumes as Trump mocks Rob Reiner's death, cites 'Trump Derangement Syndrome' as the cause

As tributes poured in from across Hollywood and Washington following the shocking deaths of legendary filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer, President Donald Trump took a markedly different tone, using the moment to center himself in a message that quickly drew attention for its rhetoric. In an early-morning post on Truth Social, Trump responded to news of the couple’s deaths by attributing them to what he described as political hostility directed at him, rather than offering condolences. The president wrote that Reiner and Singer had “passed away,” due to “the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS.”

“He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before,” Trump added. “May Rob and Michele rest in peace.”Over a decades-long career, Reiner directed and produced some of the most enduring films in modern cinema, including This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, and A Few Good Men.

Beyond his work in film and television, Reiner was also known for his outspoken political activism.Prominent Democratic leaders publicly mourned the couple, emphasizing Reiner’s cultural legacy and lifelong civic engagement.“Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen,” former President Barack Obama wrote on X. “But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people, and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action.

Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass echoed those sentiments in a statement released Sunday.“This is a devastating loss for our city and our country. Rob Reiner’s contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice,” Bass said.

“An acclaimed actor, director, producer, writer, and engaged political activist, he always used his gifts in service of others.”

Social media reaction

The obituary cum trolling did not go well with people who are still reeling with the shocking death of their beloved Hollywood star. One user on X wrote, "Jesus Christ this is so bad...I wish I was genuinely shocked by President Trump's response...but alas I am not, and that's the sad part...keep

the Reiner family lifted up in prayer."Another user said, "I’m actually not shocked after what he said about Debbie Dingell’s husband looking up from hell “maybe he’s looking up, I dunno”"A third user also wrote, "Donald Trump issues a full Presidential pardon for all convicted of not praising Charlie Kirk after his murder."

What happened to Rob Reiner and his wife

Emergency responders were called to a home in Los Angeles on Sunday, December 14, at around 3:30 p.m.,

after a request for medical aid was made, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. When crews arrived, they found a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman deceased inside the residence, the LAFD told PEOPLE. Sources later confirmed the victims were filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.Police subsequently launched a homicide investigation after confirming the deaths of a man, 78, and a woman, 68, at a house in an affluent Los Angeles neighbourhood.

Reports first emerged Sunday afternoon that authorities had discovered the bodies inside a Brentwood home owned by Reiner following the medical call to the fire department. The Los Angeles Police Department later said detectives from its Robbery-Homicide Division were investigating the deaths as an “apparent homicide.” Both TMZ and PEOPLE reported that the victims had sustained injuries consistent with a knife attack.According to a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation, investigators were questioning a family member in connection with the deaths. The official, who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to discuss the case publicly, said investigators believe the pair suffered stab wounds.A spokesperson for the Reiner family confirmed the deaths later Sunday evening.“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,” the family spokesperson said in a statement to media. “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”Reiner had been married to photographer Michele Singer Reiner since 1989. The couple met while he was directing When Harry Met Sally, a film he made with his longtime friend Nora Ephron after spending a decade single.

Inspired by their relationship, Reiner altered the film’s original ending so that Harry and Sally ultimately ended up together.Born in the Bronx, New York, in 1947, Reiner was the son of famed comic actor Carl Reiner and singer Estelle Lebost. He began his career as an actor in the 1960s and gained widespread recognition for his role as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the sitcom All in the Family, appearing in all nine seasons of the show.
