Star Indian shuttler Tanvi Sharma and junior women’s coach Park Tae-sang’s reaction after the former sealed a historic medal for the country at the BWF World Junior Championships has gone viral on social media.

Tanvi, who is the top seed in the competition and a title favourite, was playing Japan’s Saki Matsumoto in the quarterfinals and had lost the first game 13-15, worrying the entire Indian contingent in Guwahati.

But Tanvi came back stronger, to win the next two games 15-9, 15-10 to move into the semifinals and seal a historic medal for India.

Expectedly elated and relieved after the win, Tanvi went down on the court, shrieking in joy. She got up and went on to shake hands with the coaches, where Tae-sang, sitting with his face in his hands, exclaimed even louder, before giving a pat on the 16-year-old’s back.

The last Indian woman to win a World Junior medal was 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal, who claimed gold at the 2008 edition in Pune.

Saina, who won silver in 2006 as well and Aparna Popat, who claimed silver in 1996, are the only other Indian women to have reached the podium in the history of the tournament.

Top-seeded Tanvi, who won bronze at this year’s Badminton Asia Junior Championships as well, began aggressively, quickly taking control and opening a 10-6 lead.

However, a series of errors permitted Matsumoto to mount a comeback, winning seven successive points to seize the lead. Tanvi managed to halt the streak but lost the game.

Tanvi was much more comfortable with her shot selection in the second game and raced to a 15-9 victory over Matsumoto.

However, early errors in the third game put Tanvi on the back foot and she faced mounting pressure, trailing 5-8 as the shuttlers changed ends.

Those nerves settled as Tanvi clinched four straight points to take the lead at 9-8 and then used her flat tosses and cross smashes to outplay her opponent.

Tanvi will take on China’s Si Ya Liu in the semifinals on Saturday, October 18.
