The Seattle Storm are turning a new page and making history in the process.
Sonia Raman, currently an assistant with the New York Liberty, has agreed to become the next head coach of the Seattle Storm.
The hire hasn’t been officially announced yet, but ESPN first broke the news.
Raman, who previously spent four seasons as an assistant with the Memphis Grizzlies, will become the first person of Indian descent to serve as a head coach in the WNBA — a landmark moment for both the league and representation in sports.
From MIT to the WNBA Sidelines
Before joining the pros, Raman built a powerhouse at MIT, coaching from 2008 to 2020 and becoming the winningest coach in program history. She led the team to two NCAA Division III Tournament appearances before jumping to the NBA ranks.
Storm Reboot After Playoff Exit
Raman takes over from Noelle Quinn, who was dismissed last month after the Las Vegas Aces bounced the Storm in the first round. It’s a pivotal offseason in Seattle — stars like Nneka Ogwumike, Skylar Diggins, Gabby Williams, and Brittney Sykes are all set to hit free agency.
Still, the Storm have a bright piece to build around in rising star Dominique Malonga, last year’s No. 2 overall pick.
Meanwhile, Raman’s old team — the New York Liberty — is now the only WNBA squad still searching for a head coach after parting ways with Sandy Brondello. Raman was reportedly in the running for that job, too.
