SpiceJet’s FIR against a senior army officer, who allegedly assaulted four of the airline’s ground staff members, has described the attack as “unprovoked", “violent", and “abusive" in nature and against “multiple civilian employees of SpiceJet".

According to the FIR, accessed by CNN-News18, the army officer has been charged with “murderous assault" over his actions regarding excess baggage with SpiceJet Airlines at Srinagar airport last week.

The FIR has been registered under sections 115(2), 126(2), 351(2) and 131 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertain to voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful restraint, criminal intimidation, and assaulting or using criminal force.

The assault was such that the SpiceJet employees were left with a spinal fracture and injuries to the jaw. “Officer engaged in an unprovoked and violent assault against multiple civilian employees of SpiceJet Airlines," states the formal police complaint by SpiceJet. “The passenger then assaulted multiple staff members, causing grievous injuries to the staff."

The complaint further states that the officer “verbally abused and criminally intimidated in an aggressive and threatening manner". The FIR identifies the victims as Govindrajan Swami, Mudasir Ashraf Khan, Nadeem Sofi, and Emaad Bhat.

SpiceJet confirmed that it has filed the FIR with the local police and has begun the process of placing the officer on India’s no-fly list.

“SpiceJet has written to the ministry of civil aviation appraising them about the murderous assault on its staff and has requested appropriate action against the passenger," it said.

It said it has handed over CCTV footage of the incident to the authorities. “SpiceJet strongly condemns any act of violence against its employees and will pursue this matter to its fullest legal and regulatory conclusion," it added.

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE SRINAGAR AIRPORT?

An earlier statement released by SpiceJet said the army officer “grievously assaulted four SpiceJet employees at the boarding gate of flight SG-386 from Srinagar to Delhi on July 26, 2025".

An argument reportedly broke out between the army officer and SpiceJet employees after he was told that his two pieces of cabin baggage, weighing a total of 16 kg, exceeded the permissible limit of 7 kg.

SpiceJet said when staff members “politely informed [him] of the excess baggage and asked to pay the applicable charges", he refused and forcefully entered the aerobridge without completing the boarding process. The airline described this as “a clear violation of aviation security protocols". He was escorted back by a CISF official.

What followed was a violent episode at the boarding gate.

“Our staff members suffered a spinal fracture and serious jaw injuries after being attacked with punches, repeated kicks and a queue stand," the airline said. “One SpiceJet employee collapsed unconscious on the floor, but the passenger continued kicking and hitting the fainted employee."

Another staff member attempting to assist the injured colleague was also attacked. “Another staff member suffered bleeding from the nose and mouth after receiving a forceful kick to the jaw while bending down to assist the colleague who had fainted," the airline said.

All four injured employees were rushed to a hospital and are undergoing treatment for what the airline described as “grievous injuries".
