A minor girl in Uttar Pradesh was sent to a detention home after she posted an Instagram video with derogatory remarks against Hindu deities.

A minor girl in Uttar Pradesh was sent to a detention home and her parents were arrested after she posted a video on Instagram making derogatory remarks against Hindu deities. The incident took place on October 27, when the girl uploaded a nearly one-minute reel in which she was seen making objectionable comments about Hindu gods. The video quickly went viral, drawing strong criticism from social media users and several Hindu organisations, who demanded action against her and her family.

Multiple complaints were filed with the local police station following which the girl was detained and placed her in a juvenile detention home while her parents were arrested for allegedly being aware of the act but concealing it.

“The minor girl made derogatory remarks against Hindu gods. Her parents were aware of it, and others were also involved. The girl told us she made the video to increase her followers on social media. We have arrested her parents. We urge people not to share or circulate the video further. Strict action will be taken against those who do," police said.

A case has also been registered against another man said to be involved in the video’s circulation. He is currently absconding, police said. A video later surfaced showing the teenager apologising for her actions in front of police officials.

“I made a mistake by making the video. I apologise. I will never make such a mistake again. I request people not to make the video viral," she said in the clip.
