The Centre has introduced a bill in the Lok Sabha to make Amravati the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh, ending the three-capital model. The move follows a unanimous resolution passed by the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly on 28 March urging legal recognition for Amravati as the permanent capital. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has been advocating for Amravati as the capital, a vision that faced roadblocks during the YSRCP government between 2019 and 2024. The Congress party has extended support to the bill with riders including assurance of Central assistance and funding for development of Amravati and other regions for holistic growth. The BJP has also backed the bill, with MP CM Ramesh thanking nearly 34,000 farmers who contributed 29,000 acres of land for the capital. TDP MP Pema Swamy delivered an emotional speech in support. With Congress backing and NDA support, the bill's passage appears assured.
