Nashik: The expansion plan of Nashik airport — operated by the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) — has received approvals from the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS).This has paved the way for accelerated execution of the project ahead of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2027. The Rs572-crore expansion project, sanctioned by the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Development Authority, is aimed at handling the anticipated surge in passenger traffic during the mega religious event. The work is being undertaken by the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation.TOI has accessed a copy of the approval granted by the aviation authorities.
The approval is expected to fast-track ongoing work, with the project designed to enhance the airport’s capacity by nearly threefold.Currently, the airport handles around 300 passengers per hour, which is considered inadequate to meet the expected Kumbh rush. Once expanded, it will be capable of handling up to 1,000 passengers per hour. The expansion plan includes construction of a new 17,800sqmt integrated terminal, development of a 1.15 lakh sqmt apron to improve aircraft parking capacity, and creation of 25,000 sqmt of vehicle parking space.
Modern facilities such as aerobridges and advanced security systems will also be incorporated.Airport authorities have been directed to follow standard operating procedures during construction and maintain close coordination with air traffic services. Daily updates on ongoing works will be shared to ensure safety of flight operations.Located at Janori, about 20km from Nashik city, the airport currently operates flights to major cities such as New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Bengaluru, and is equipped for night landings.Industry representatives said the project would significantly improve connectivity and boost economic growth in the region. Manish Rawal, vice-chairman of the Nashik Industries and Manufacturers’ Association, said the airport expansion would facilitate smoother travel for devotees, generate employment and strengthen the district’s position as a key regional hub.
