Iran ambassador Ali Bahreini says Donald Trump's threats jeopardise US-Iran peace talks in Switzerland, progress and assets at stake.

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations has accused US President Donald Trump of jeopardising talks to end the war in West Asia by continuously issuing threats.

The talks at the Burgenstock resort involved delegations from Iran, the United States, Pakistan and Qatar under the recently signed Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which aims to reduce regional tensions and advance a wider diplomatic framework.

After the end of the talks, Reuters quoted Ambassador Ali Bahreini saying that there was good progress in the peace talks between the US and Iran but the threats by Trump put the latest talks in Switzerland in serious jeopardy.

The remarks come after Trump, during the talks, warned Iran to “immediately stop their highly paid PROXIES in Lebanon from causing trouble," referring to Hezbollah. “If they don’t, we’ll hit Iran very hard again, just like we did last week, only harder", Trump said.

Responding these remarks, Reuters quoted Bahreini saying that Iran would keep negotiating with the US as long as Washington showed that it was ready to engage in a constructive way.

The envoy’s remarks were echoed by Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf who also  revealed how negotiations between Iranian and US officials in Switzerland were disrupted after Tehran learned of Trump’s remarks.

“In the middle of the discussions, I learned that Trump had made threatening remarks regarding our president, the negotiating team, and possible attacks on our territory," Ghalibaf can be seen saying in a video posted by the Iranian embassy in India.

According to CNBC TV18, Ghalibaf said he immediately raised the issue with Vice President JD Vance and said: “We are here engaged in talks, and according to the signed understanding, the first clause states that there should be no threats or coercion. Yet today your president has issued threats. Understand that we never negotiate under threats or pressure."

He further said that the Iranian delegation then ended the talks and left the meeting. “We ended the negotiations, left the meeting, and did not return," he said.

The Iran’s chief negotiator warned the US on Sunday against making further threats against the Islamic Republic and vowing that Iran’s armed forces were ready to respond if necessary. “Iran does not take American threats into account."

A day after returning to the United States following talks with Iran in Switzerland, Vance said the release of frozen Iranian assets would be linked to continued progress in negotiations.

As per the main elements of the preliminary agreement, Vance said, Iran would not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon under the proposed arrangement.

He announced that any release of frozen Iranian assets would depend on Tehran’s future commitments and verification measures while Iran has maintained that Washington has already agreed to ease restrictions and release some sanctioned assets.

Differences also emerged over the issue of nuclear inspections. Vance suggested that Iran had agreed to allow international inspectors greater access, a claim Tehran has pushed back against.

The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is seen as a significant element of the framework, given the waterway’s importance to global energy supplies and international shipping.

The agreement was announced after months of conflict and diplomatic efforts aimed at ending hostilities and restoring stability in the region.
