Satellite imagery has revealed extensive damage to road networks in Iran’s central Esfahan province, in the area where United States forces carried out a high-risk rescue operation on Sunday to extract a downed airman, according to a report by CNN.

Newly released images from Airbus show dozens of craters along multiple roads located roughly 20 kilometres from a remote airstrip where US forces had earlier destroyed their own aircraft after it was damaged.

The images indicate at least 28 craters scattered across key roadways in the region. Each crater is estimated to be around nine metres wide, large enough to completely cut across the width of the roads, suggesting deliberate and precise targeting.

The pattern of destruction, with craters appearing in succession along the roads, points to a calculated effort to block access routes and restrict movement in the area.

CNN had earlier reported that as US special operations forces moved in to rescue the stranded airman, American aircraft carried out strikes around the mountainous location where he had been hiding. The objective was to prevent Iranian forces from reaching the site before the extraction could be completed.

The satellite imagery now offers visual confirmation of the scale and precision of those strikes, underscoring the lengths to which US forces went to secure the rescue corridor during the operation.
