There are also unverified claims that Taliban fighters captured a Pakistani military outpost and took possession of the body of a slain soldier.

Tensions along the volatile Durand Line have flared up dramatically, with fresh clashes reported between Pakistani forces and the Afghan Taliban in eastern Afghanistan. The latest confrontation, centred in the Tani district of Khost Province, marks a sharp escalation in an already strained relationship between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
According to reports, the fighting erupted late at night on Sunday and quickly intensified, with both sides engaging in heavy exchanges of gunfire and mortar shelling. Afghan Taliban sources have claimed that at least six Pakistani soldiers were killed and several others injured in the clashes. There are also claims that Taliban fighters captured a Pakistani military outpost and took possession of the body of a slain soldier, though these assertions remain independently unverified.
The conflict is reportedly ongoing, with intermittent bursts of firing continuing in the Khost sector. Localised but intense, such confrontations underline the fragile security situation along the border, which has long been a flashpoint due to its disputed status and porous terrain.
At the heart of the tensions lies a deep-rooted mistrust between Islamabad and the Taliban-led government in Kabul. Since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, relations have steadily deteriorated, largely over the presence and activities of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan. Pakistan has repeatedly accused the Afghan Taliban of providing safe haven to TTP militants, who have carried out a series of deadly attacks inside Pakistani territory.
On the other hand, Afghan Taliban authorities have rejected these accusations, while also criticising Pakistan’s cross-border strikes and fencing efforts along the Durand Line. For Kabul, the border itself remains a contentious issue, as successive Afghan governments have historically refused to formally recognise it.
Intelligence sources suggest that the latest clashes are a direct fallout of Pakistan’s long-standing strategy of backing militant proxies in the region – an approach that is now producing unintended consequences. The resurgence of TTP activity, in particular, is increasingly being viewed as a “blowback" problem for Pakistan’s security establishment.
