US President Donald Trump has reshared a letter on Truth Social featuring radio host Michael Savage’s remark, making provocative claims about immigration and specifically referencing India in the context of birthright citizenship.
This comes amid an ongoing legal and political battle over the interpretation of birthright citizenship, currently under scrutiny before the Supreme Court.
SAVAGE’S REMARKS ON INDIA AND IMMIGRATION
In a video widely shared on social media, Savage directly mentioned India while arguing against birthright citizenship, claiming that immigrants are exploiting the system.
He alleged that families use childbirth in the US as a pathway to citizenship, stating people come to the country “to just drop a baby here", who becomes “an infant citizen and then they bring the entire family in from China or India or some other hell-hole on the planet".
He goes further, making sweeping claims about employment patterns, saying, “Your chances are nil, you have to be from India or China," and alleging that “almost all the internal mechanisms are set up to be run by Indians and Chinese."
He adds, “I know it for a fact," without providing evidence.
Savage also suggests that India is among the countries “abusing" the system, saying, “It’s not limited to China. It’s also India. They’re also abusing it."
CRITICISM OF IMMIGRATION AND NATIONAL IDENTITY
Expanding on his argument, Savage claimed that the traditional “melting pot" of American society no longer exists, arguing that newer immigrant groups are not integrating in the same way as earlier European migrants.
He asserted that demographic changes are altering the country’s identity and alleges declining loyalty among immigrant communities.
These claims were presented as part of his opposition to birthright citizenship, which he called “ludicrous" in its current interpretation.
ATTACK ON LEGAL SYSTEM AND ACLU
Savage also criticised the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), accusing it of enabling such immigration patterns.
He described the organisation as “the head of the snake" and claimed its lawyers are working to undermine the country.
He argued that the issue should not be left to courts, saying birthright citizenship should be decided by public vote.
“Let the citizens decide."
He claimed public opinion would overwhelmingly support restrictions.
TRUMP’S STANCE ON BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP
Trump’s decision to repost the video aligns with his long-standing opposition to birthright citizenship.
Trump had recently criticised the US Supreme Court’s handling of arguments related to restricting birthright citizenship and had pushed for changes to existing interpretations.
Immigration and citizenship policies remain central to Trump’s political agenda, with the president repeatedly raising concerns about current laws and advocating stricter controls.
The legal battle stems in part from Trump-era efforts and subsequent policy pushes aimed at limiting automatic citizenship for children born in the US to non-citizen parents, an issue now being debated at the highest judicial level.
Savage concluded his commentary by reiterating his opposition to birthright citizenship and calling for decisive political action, framing the issue as central to the future of the United States.
