A forest home guard was killed and another injured when a rhinoceros charged at them in the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve on Sunday (February 15, 2026).
Officials said the incident occurred around noon when the two guards were on routine patrol near the Bordoloni Camp under the park’s Kohora Range.
“Sahabuddin, a home guard, succumbed to his injuries while being rushed to a hospital at Kohora for emergency treatment,” Arun Vignesh C.S., Kaziranga’s Deputy Director, said.
The other staff member, Ramen Borah, was transferred to the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital after preliminary treatment at the Kohora medical facility. Doctors said he was under medical observation.
The medical college is about 90 km east of Kohora.
Officials said the incident underlined the hazards frontline forest staff face in wildlife protection and conservation of the rhino habitat, a UNESCO World Heritage site with a core area of 430 sq. km.
