Gandhinagar: Under the state government’s Wire Free City campaign, the work of removing overhead lines in urban areas and laying underground lines is in progress. But the process of laying underground lines in rural areas is not as easy and practical as in urban areas economically and technically, so the MVCC (Medium Voltage Covered Conductor) technology has been developed by the GPRD cell of GUVNL to ensure that there is a consistent and quality power supply in rural, coastal and forest areas.
Under this technology, old bare aluminum wires are replaced with MVCC i.e. insulated wires. MVCC conductors have a strong insulation covering, due to which the chances of power interruption and accidents are significantly reduced.
Since power lines in rural areas often pass close to trees, there is a possibility of sparking due to friction of branches and power supply is disrupted. Apart from this, incidents of fire occur. Due to strong winds in coastal areas, there is a possibility of sparking when two wires come together. In addition, the problem of corrosion of exposed aluminum wires also arises due to the salinity in the weather and the influence of chemical/industrial zones in coastal areas.
Since MVCC wires are insulated, there is no possibility of electrical fault due to tree branches or other metal objects touching them. Also, sparking does not occur even if two wires come together due to wind. Due to insulation, there is no possibility of corrosion in MVCC wires. As a result, electrical accidents can be avoided, which has resulted in a significant reduction in power interruptions.
Dakshin Gujarat Electricity Company Limited (DGVCL) has installed MVCC wires in old lines of 43 kilometers in the year 2023-24, 2681 kilometers in the year 2024-25 and 2578 kilometers in the year 2025-26 (up to January-2026).
As a result of this campaign, there has been success in maintaining the continuity of power supply in coastal, forest and rural areas and there has been a significant reduction in power interruptions.
DGVCL aims to cover all residential power feeders in rural, forest and coastal areas of South Gujarat under MVCC technology in the coming time. South Gujarat Power Company Limited (DGVCL) is continuously committed to providing a more secure, reliable and quality power supply to the electricity consumers.
