NASA has released a historic image of Earth taken from the far side of the Moon, marking a milestone moment in human spaceflight.

The photograph, titled “Humanity From the Other Side," was captured by Reid Wiseman, commander of Artemis II, through the window of the Orion capsule as the spacecraft emerged from behind the lunar horizon.

The image shows Earth rising beyond the Moon. The White House shared the image on social media, calling it a powerful reminder of humanity’s place in the cosmos.

Artemis II, NASA’s first crewed lunar mission in more than 50 years, made history on Monday during its flyby of the Moon.

The four-member crew, Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, mission specialist Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, set a new record for the farthest distance traveled by humans from Earth.

The astronauts surpassed the record established by Apollo 13 in 1970, travelling beyond 248,655 statute miles from the planet.

Addressing mission control, Hansen said the crew intended the moment to inspire future generations to push the boundaries of space exploration, expressing hope that the record would soon be broken again.

During the flyby, the crew also proposed naming a previously unnamed lunar crater in memory of Wiseman’s late wife, Carroll.

The seven-hour lunar flyby included a roughly 40-minute communications blackout as Orion passed behind the Moon, temporarily cutting off contact with Earth, a planned and routine phase of deep-space missions.

During this period, the crew became part of an elite group of astronauts who have witnessed an “Earthrise" from the Moon’s far side.

After communications were restored, Koch remarked on the emotional moment, saying it was “so great to hear Earth again." NASA later confirmed that Orion had begun its return journey.

The 10-day Artemis II mission is now headed back to Earth and is expected to conclude on Friday with a reentry and splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego, marking another major step in NASA’s roadmap to future lunar and deep-space exploration.
