President Donald Trump has warned China that it could face steep new trade penalties if it provides military support to Iran amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Speaking on Fox News on Sunday, Trump said his administration would move to dramatically increase tariffs on Chinese goods entering the United States if Beijing is found to be assisting Tehran militarily.
“If we catch them doing that, they get a 50 percent tariff, which is a staggering — that’s a staggering amount," Trump said, underscoring the scale of the potential economic punishment.
According to a report by AFP, Trump is scheduled to travel to Beijing next month for talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, after previously postponing a planned summit because of the conflict with Iran. The visit is expected to focus heavily on trade and security issues, with Trump’s latest comments likely to add further strain to an already complex US-China relationship.
