Israeli airstrikes hit the town of Zefta in southern Lebanon, with videos emerging from the area showing buildings being struck and thick plumes of smoke rising from the site.
Footage circulating on social media showed smoke billowing into the sky after the strikes, with structures in the town appearing to have been targeted.
The attack comes amid continuing tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border, where cross-border hostilities have been reported in recent months.
Meanwhile, hours after a ceasefire was announced in the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran, Israeli strikes hit busy commercial and residential areas in central Beirut without warning on Wednesday. Lebanon said at least 182 people were killed and hundreds were wounded, making it the deadliest day in the latest Israel-Hezbollah war.
US President Donald Trump told PBS NewsHour that Lebanon was not included in the ceasefire deal between Washington and Tehran, attributing the exclusion to the presence of the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah. When asked about Israel’s ongoing strikes in Lebanon, Trump described the situation as “a separate skirmish.
Israel has also maintained that the ceasefire agreement does not apply to its military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon. However, Iran and mediator Pakistan have said that the truce should extend to the Lebanon front as well.
The brief sense of relief in Lebanon following the ceasefire announcement quickly gave way to panic after what the Israeli military described as its largest coordinated attack in the ongoing war. It said more than 100 Hezbollah targets were struck within 10 minutes across Beirut, southern Lebanon, and the eastern Bekaa Valley.
In response to the attacks on Lebanon, Iran later Wednesday said it was again halting the movement of oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, the country’s state-run media reported.
