From watching rocket launches as a child in Houston to becoming the highest-ranking civil servant at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Amit Kshatriya’s journey to the top of America’s space agency is one for the books.

As NASA’s Associate Administrator, Amit Kshatriya serves as the agency’s de facto chief operating officer- leading its 10 centre directors and mission directorate heads at NASA Headquarters in Washington while also functioning as a senior advisor to Administrator Jared Isaacman. In effect, he is the man who keeps NASA running.

A Houston Kid Who Grew Up Watching Rockets

Amit Kshatriya was born in Brookfield, Wisconsin, to first-generation Indian immigrant parents, but considers Katy- a suburb of Houston, Texas- his hometown. It was there, in a city that is home to NASA’s Mission Control at the Johnson Space Centre, that his fascination with space took root. He would watch rocket launches and, somewhere along the way, decided he wanted to be part of what made them possible.

He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from the California Institute of Technology and a Master of Arts in mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin- credentials that would eventually carry him from the classroom to Mission Control.

From Oil Fields To Outer Space

After graduation, Amit Kshatriya did not go straight to NASA. He spent time in the oil and gas industry and the medical sector before joining United Space Alliance- NASA’s primary contractor for the space shuttle programme- in 2003. There, he worked as a software engineer, robotics engineer and spacecraft operator, focusing primarily on the robotic assembly of the International Space Station.

That hands-on technical foundation would define the trajectory of his career. From 2014 to 2017, he served as a space station flight director, leading global teams through all phases of station operations. He then became deputy and acting manager of the ISS Vehicle Office, overseeing sustaining engineering, logistics and hardware programme management.

The Artemis Architect

In 2021, Amit Kshatriya moved to NASA Headquarters as assistant deputy associate administrator for the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate and became an integral part of the team behind Artemis I, the mission that returned a human-capable spacecraft to lunar trajectory for the first time in decades. He subsequently served as Deputy Associate Administrator for NASA’s Moon to Mars programme, helping shape the agency’s long-term vision for a sustained human presence on the lunar surface as a launchpad for future interplanetary missions. In September last year, he was named NASA’s Associate Administrator- the agency’s highest civil service post.

A Decorated Career

Amit Kshatriya’s contributions have been recognised at the highest levels of the agency. He received the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal for his role as lead flight director during the 50th expedition to the International Space Station. He is also a recipient of the Silver Snoopy- an award bestowed by astronauts themselves for outstanding performance contributing to flight safety- for his work as lead robotics officer during the Commercial Orbital Transportation Services Dragon demonstration mission.
