The Karnataka government is considering restricting mobile phone use for students under the age of 16 in schools and colleges. The move comes amid concerns over rising social media addiction among children.
The state has sought the opinion of vice chancellors of government universities on the proposal.
Concerns over social media and drugs
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah raised concerns about growing social media obsession among students. He said this was affecting behaviour, education and mental health, and increasing exposure to drugs.
He asked university heads for their views on restricting mobile phones on campuses for minors.
What Siddaramaiah said
Addressing the vice chancellors, Siddaramaiah said the matter was under discussion and their opinion was important. He said children were falling prey to drugs and many were addicted to social media.
He added that several countries, including Australia, have already imposed similar restrictions on mobile phone use among school students.
He clarified that the proposal would apply to children below 16 years of age and not to adults.
If implemented, the move would bring Karnataka in line with such countries.
