Formula 1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali has moved to calm fears that Max Verstappen could walk away from the sport amid criticism of the incoming 2026 regulations.

Verstappen, a four-time world champion with Red Bull Racing, has not hidden his reservations about the new-generation cars. The Dutchman has labelled the 2026 rules “anti-racing" and compared the driving feel to “like Formula E on steroids."

For a driver who has dominated the modern era, securing four consecutive F1 titles, winning alone is no longer enough.

“A winning car for me doesn’t matter," Verstappen said. “It needs to be fun to drive as well, at this stage of my career."

The sweeping regulation overhaul will introduce a 50-50 split between electric power and internal combustion, significantly increasing the strategic importance of energy deployment and regeneration.

The traditional drag reduction system (DRS) will also be replaced by a new overtake mode delivering a temporary power boost.

The changes have sparked debate throughout pre-season testing — not just about performance, but about whether the cars will still deliver the raw racing spectacle fans expect.

Domenicali: “There’s No Risk"

Despite Verstappen’s blunt assessment, Domenicali insists there is no danger of the reigning champion quitting.

“I have a very good relationship with Max," the Italian said on a video call with reporters. “I know him very well. I spend a lot of time with him. That’s the reason. Full stop. He loves Formula 1. There’s no doubt about it."

Domenicali revealed he met Verstappen during testing in Bahrain and described the discussion as constructive.

“I guarantee you that Max wants and cares about Formula 1 more than anyone else," he added. “He has a way of putting the point that he wants to say in a certain way."

He also confirmed further talks would take place with the FIA to address Verstappen’s concerns and ensure that “the driving style" remains central to the sport’s identity.

Verstappen is contracted to Red Bull Racing through 2028. But as he’s made clear before, if F1 stops feeling like F1, even titles might not be enough.
