The Bengaluru police saved a 16-year-old girl who allegedly attempted to end her life by threatening to jump from the fifth floor of an apartment building in NRI Layout under the limits of the Ramamurthy Nagar Police Station on Thursday.

The teenager reportedly climbed onto the terrace of the five-storeyed apartment building and attempted to jump, triggering panic among residents and passersby.

According to the police, the incident is suspected to have stemmed from ongoing family disputes. Officials said the family had approached the police nearly two months ago, alleging that the girl was frequently leaving home and remaining untraceable for two to three days at a stretch. Investigators suspect repeated restrictions imposed by the family and domestic disagreements may have pushed her to take the extreme step.

Following an alert received through the emergency response service Namma 112, the Hoysala-50 Ramamurthy Nagar patrol team rushed to the spot and launched rescue operations.

With assistance from personnel of the Karnataka Fire and Emergency Services and members of the public, police carefully negotiated with the teenager and safely rescued her after nearly an hour-long operation.

She was administered first aid at the scene and later shifted to the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences for counselling and further treatment.
