Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office on Wednesday confirmed that he had held a secret meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed amid the ongoing war with Iran.

In a statement, Netanyahu’s office said, “In the midst of Operation Roaring Lion, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu secretly visited the United Arab Emirates, where he met with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed."

The meeting comes amid stalled peace efforts and during US President Donald Trump’s visit to China.

The announcement also followed remarks by the US ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, who said Israel had deployed Iron Dome air defence systems and military personnel to the UAE during the conflict with Iran.

Netanyahu’s office described the visit as “a historic breakthrough in relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates".
