What was meant to be a routine space broadcast took a surprising turn when a floating jar of Nutella grabbed global attention, turning the livestream into an instant viral sensation.
During NASA’s Artemis II mission, viewers tuning in to a live broadcast were surprised to see a jar of the popular chocolate-hazelnut spread drifting weightlessly inside the Orion spacecraft.
The unexpected appearance came just minutes before astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen were set to surpass the historic distance record established by Apollo 13 in 1970, a milestone moment for the mission.
Instead of the crew alone commanding attention, it was the floating jar that quickly became the talk of the internet. Suspended in zero gravity, the Nutella container gently rotated as it moved across the frame, its label clearly visible, giving the impression of a perfectly timed, almost cinematic product placement, despite being entirely accidental.

According to reports, the moment occurred roughly four minutes before the Artemis II crew crossed the Apollo 13 record distance of 248,655 miles from Earth. While the mission itself marked a significant step forward in space exploration, the unexpected cameo added a light-hearted twist that resonated widely online.
Sensing the buzz, the brand joined in on the conversation by sharing the clip on X. The post read, “Nutella is out of this world." Further adding, the note read, “Honoured to have travelled further than any spread in history. Taking spreading smiles to new heights.❤️"
The internet was quick to react, with many users amused by what they described as the ‘ultimate space advertisement.’ One user joked, “Nutella just got the ultimate Space Ad provided by the Artemis 2 crew. Haha. Just minutes before beating the record of furthest humans from earth."
Another comment celebrated Italian innovation, saying, “One of the many Italian products that excel in the world… and with Nutella, and also #Leonardo, we’re always one step ahead of everyone!"
Many praised the moment as an example of effortless marketing, with one user writing, “This is free advertising at its best! I love Nutella! Now I can honestly say it’s out of this world!"
Others joined in with playful suggestions, including a call for a special edition product: “Limited edition ‘Moontella’ coming soon or nah? @NutellaUSA."
However, not all reactions were positive. Some users criticised the brand’s decision to capitalise on the moment so quickly. One comment read, “It would have been better if you would have stayed quiet, would have respected your brand more. Let the product and moment speak for itself, you didn’t have to post this lame post, Thirsty fools. Should have waited till they got back safe and sound. Fire your PR people,"
