US President Donald Trump lavished praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing him as one of the world’s top leaders and highlighting four qualities he believes set the Indian leader apart: his ability to keep India out of wars, the country’s economic performance, political stability under his tenure and a leadership style that combines calmness with toughness.

The remarks came when Trump was asked in an interview to name the two greatest leaders in the world. After mentioning Chinese President Xi Jinping, the US President singled out PM Modi for special praise.

“Modi is very good. India has had some very good numbers. Modi stays out of wars, which is smart," Trump said.

Here are the four reasons Trump cited while praising the Indian prime minister:

1. ‘Modi Stays Out Of Wars’

Trump’s first point was PM Modi’s approach to international conflicts. The US President said India’s ability to avoid military entanglements under PM Modi’s leadership was a sign of strategic wisdom.

“Modi stays out of wars, which is smart," Trump said, suggesting that he views restraint and stability as important leadership qualities.

2. India’s Strong Economic Numbers

Trump also pointed to India’s economic performance, saying the country had registered impressive growth and results under PM Modi’s leadership.

“India has had some very good numbers," he said, in an apparent reference to the country’s economic expansion and development over the past decade.

3. More Than A Decade Of Political Stability

The US President contrasted PM Modi’s long tenure with what he described as an earlier period of frequent political changes in India.

“All my life I’ve watched India. They just kept changing, changing, changing. Somebody would be there for six months and then a year and then all of a sudden, Prime Minister Modi ends up there," Trump said.

4. ‘A Great Calmness’ Coupled With Toughness

Perhaps Trump’s most detailed observation concerned PM Modi’s leadership style.

“He does it through, like, there’s a great calmness, and yet he’s not a calm person," Trump said. The US President went on to describe PM Modi as “a very tough guy," adding, “I know him very well."

The praise comes just days after Trump underscored his personal rapport with PM Modi during their meeting on the sidelines of the G7 summit. During that interaction, Trump said India would have US support if it came under attack while PM Modi remained prime minister.

“If anybody attacks that man, we’re going to be there now," Trump said, adding, “I think India plays a big role in everything. As long as he’s the leader."
