Telangana Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha on Tuesday said the State government is examining the establishment of a dedicated nursing directorate to oversee the training, skill upgradation and professional development of nursing personnel in the State. Nearly 1.85 lakh nursing professionals are currently working in the sector in Telangana.

The Minister made the announcement while handing over appointment letters to 1,919 newly-recruited nursing officers at Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad. Addressing the gathering, he said the proposed directorate was being considered to strengthen the nursing profession in the State and ensure continuous training and modern skill development for healthcare workers.

Mr. Raja Narasimha said nurses required regular upgrades in line with advances in modern medicine and healthcare practices. He noted that periodic training and grading mechanisms were necessary to maintain quality healthcare services and said the government was moving in that direction through the proposed directorate.

The Minister also announced that the State government had started 16 new government nursing colleges, taking the total number of nursing colleges in Telangana to around 37. He said all nursing colleges would be equipped with improved infrastructure, including hostel accommodation and administrative blocks, within the next year.

Highlighting employment opportunities abroad, Mr. Raja Narasimha said countries such as Japan, Germany and Sweden were facing increasing demand for trained nursing professionals due to ageing populations. “Telangana government has been providing communication skills and language training to help nursing officers secure overseas opportunities,” he added.

The Minister also said the government intends to encourage midwifery programmes in an effort to reduce C-section deliveries in Telangana. He said specialised 18-month midwifery courses would be promoted for nursing graduates.
