Three progressive candidates endorsed by New York City’s democratic socialist mayor, Zohran Mamdani, swept Democratic primaries for House seats on Tuesday in a stunning repeat victory for the leader.

The fresh triumph speaks volumes about Mamdani’s growing dominance in America’s political landscape, just six months into his tenure as the mayor of New York City. 

Two incumbents –– Rep. Dan Goldman and Rep. Adriano Espaillat –– were defeated in the process, according to CNBC. 

Brad Lander, who served as the city’s comptroller, defeated Rep. Dan Goldman in the 10th Congressional District. Mamdani-endorsed Darializa Avila Chevalier toppled Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the 13th District.

The third candidate, Claire Valdez, won the primary for the seventh District. Incumbent Rep. Nydia Velázquez, who currently represents the district, is not running for another term, CNBC reported.

‘Electing Better Democrats’

In November 2025, 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani swept the New York City’s mayoral polls, defeating former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo for a second time.

“It’s not just a question of electing more Democrats. It’s a question of electing better Democrats," Mamdani said, as reported by The Associated Press.

The NYC Mayor hailed his candidates, highlighting that they intend to “put working people back at the heart of our politics". During the NYC mayoral polls, Mamdani had actively raised issues of the working-class.

The victory of the Mamdani-backed candidates provide an overview of the battle expected to dominate the 2028 presidential election.
