New intelligence from the United States suggests that China may be preparing to supply air defence systems to Iran in the coming weeks. The report, first carried by CNN, cited sources familiar with the assessments.

According to the findings, Beijing is believed to be planning the transfer of shoulder-fired air defence systems. The report also said efforts are being made to route these shipments through third countries in order to hide their origin.

China denies allegations

China has strongly rejected the claims. Its embassy in Washington said that it has “never provided weapons to any party to the conflict" and described the report as “untrue".

The denial comes even as questions grow over Beijing’s role in the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

China’s position in Iran war

China’s involvement in the Iran war appears indirect but significant. It has tried to prevent the conflict from expanding, while also protecting its own oil and trade interests. At the same time, Beijing is seeking to avoid any direct confrontation with the United States.

Reports and policy assessments indicate that China has provided Iran with dual-use technology, intelligence support and missile-related assistance. These measures help Iran maintain its defensive capabilities without China entering the conflict openly.

Mediation and de-escalation efforts

Beijing has positioned itself as a voice for restraint. It has pushed for de-escalation, arguing that a wider conflict would disrupt global energy supplies and harm economic growth.

One account suggests that China played a role in encouraging Iran to accept a ceasefire proposal through regional channels. This approach reflects Beijing’s preference to influence events without direct military involvement.

China and Iran share long-standing ties that go beyond the current conflict. These include cooperation in oil trade, cybersecurity, navigation systems and radar technology.

Such links, while not amounting to direct participation in the war, enhance Iran’s ability to sustain its missile and drone programmes.

China’s approach appears to be a balance between stability and influence.
