The United States on Sunday rescued a wounded crew member of a downed F-15E jet who had been stranded in Iran’s mountains for more than 24 hours. However, Iran’s account of the operation sharply contradicts Washington’s version, with both sides presenting completely different narratives of what unfolded on the ground.

What Iran claims about the operation?

Iran described the rescue as part of a wider US military incursion rather than a limited humanitarian mission. According to Iran, the operation took place amid ongoing US strikes and was seen as hostile in nature.

Iranian military voices claimed the mission was a “deception and escape mission" that was “completely foiled". They said Iranian forces disrupted the effort and prevented its success.

Spokesman of the Khatam Al-Anbiya Central Headquarters said, “The US military’s so-called “rescue operation," planned as a deceptive rapid extraction mission under the pretext of saving the pilot of a downed aircraft at an abandoned airfield in southern Isfahan, ended in total failure after Iranian armed forces arrived in time."

Some reports went further, stating that two C-130 transport aircraft and two Black Hawk helicopters were destroyed during the operation. There were also claims of clashes and injuries among US personnel, though these have not been confirmed by the United States.

Iranian media narrative

State and aligned media in Iran have strongly pushed the idea that the rescue mission was not a success. Reports described casualties during the mission and framed the episode as a failed American attempt.

Images and videos of alleged wreckage have been circulated to support this claim. Iran has also highlighted that a reward was offered for the capture of the “enemy pilot", portraying the situation as a broader military clash.

Social media war

On social media, Iranian accounts have focused on the idea that the downing of the aircraft turned into a failed rescue and retaliation attempt by the US.

This has created a clear contrast with US messaging. While Iranian posts stress resistance and losses, US officials have publicly highlighted the success of the rescue.

What the US said?

The US has rejected Iran’s version outright. According to American officials, the mission was successful and the airman was recovered safely.

They have said the rescued crew member is “safe and sound", directly contradicting claims that the operation was foiled. The US has also not acknowledged any aircraft losses or clashes described in Iranian reports.

The contrasting claims show a clear battle of narratives. Iran is presenting the mission as a failure and a sign of its battlefield strength, while the US is standing by its account of a successful rescue.
