US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (local time) said he has agreed to suspend strikes on Iran for two weeks as part of a ceasefire deal if Tehran completely reopens the vital Strait of Hormuz, after previously threatening to destroy a “whole civilisation" if Tehran failed to reach a deal.

“Subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks," Trump said on Truth Social, just over an hour before his deadline to start catastrophic attacks.

Trump termed the decision a “double-sided ceasefire" after Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz publicly requested him to extend his deadline by two weeks, while urging Iran to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz, which has been shut due to the ongoing war.

Why Did Trump Pull Back?

Trump said one of the reasons for halting attacks was that the United States “have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East."

He also said the US received a 10-point proposal from Iran, which he said was a “workable basis" on future negotiations. “Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated," he added.

Trump said the deal was subject to Iran’s agreement to pause its blockade of oil and gas supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, which typically handles about one-fifth of global oil shipments.

What Did Iran Say In 10-Point Plan?

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said it submitted its 10-point proposal to the United States via Pakistan, in which it sought controlled transit through the Strait of Hormuz in coordination with the Iranian armed forces, ending the war against Iran and allied groups, and the withdrawal of US combat forces from all regional bases.

Iran also demanded full payment of damages to Iran, lifting of all primary and secondary sanctions and the release of all of Iran’s blocked assets. “It should be noted that the approval of this resolution will turn all these agreements into binding international law and will create a major diplomatic victory for the Iranian nation," the council said in a statement.

What Happens Now?

Iran said talks between the US and Iran would take place in Islamabad, Pakistan, on April 10 (Friday), and these talks could be extended if both sides agreed. “Based on this, it was decided at the highest level that Iran will conduct negotiations with the American side in Islamabad for two weeks, strictly based on these principles," the security council said.

Iran stressed that the talks did not mean the end of the war, adding, “Iran will only accept the end of the war once the details are finalised in the negotiations, given the acceptance of the principles set forth in the 10-article plan."

According to several reports, Israel has also agreed to the two-week ceasefire announced by Trump. Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said that its military would halt its attacks across the Gulf if the US and Israeli attacks against it stop.
