Dust filled skies turned deep red over Western Australia on March 27, driven by Cyclone Narelle winds, officials said the rare vivid display was striking but not dangerous

Residents across parts of Western Australia were left stunned on March 27 when the sky suddenly turned a deep, dramatic shade of red. The striking moment, captured in a viral clip shared by AccuWeather on X, quickly spread online.
Many viewers described the scene as surreal, with some comparing it to dystopian or end-of-the-world scenarios because of the intense crimson glow that seemed to blanket the sky.
What Caused The Unusual Red Sky?
Meteorologists explained that the phenomenon was linked to a large amount of dust suspended in the atmosphere. Normally, the sky appears blue because shorter wavelengths of sunlight scatter more effectively in the air. When dust and other larger particles fill the atmosphere, that process changes. The smaller blue wavelengths scatter less, while longer wavelengths like red and orange become more visible, dramatically altering the sky’s colour—especially during sunrise or sunset.
Role Of Cyclone Narelle
In this case, the effect was amplified by strong winds associated with Cyclone Narelle. The system lifted significant amounts of dust into the air, intensifying the colour shift and making the sky appear far more vivid than typical dust-related events.
No Immediate Danger, Say Authorities
Officials in Perth and nearby regions reassured residents that the spectacle, although dramatic, was not considered dangerous. While dust storms can sometimes affect air quality and visibility, events like this rarely pose a major threat to public safety.
Scientists say such an intensely red sky is uncommon, even in Australia, where dust storms are relatively frequent. A combination of iron-rich soil particles, powerful winds, and the right atmospheric conditions created a rare visual display that captured global attention and highlighted how natural weather systems can produce extraordinary scenes in the sky.
